Plumber working at the hose reels on the back of the ute

Two Eras of Pipe Under One Grid

The old layer

Wickham became a municipality back in 1871, and the terrace rows from that era still drain through salt-glazed clay lines laid well over a century ago. Fig trees along these streets send roots after the damp at every cracked collar, so the old sewers rarely stay clear for long once a joint opens.

The new layer

At the last census, 816 dwellings stood here, and 45.1 per cent of them were flats or apartments, much of that stock raised on land the railways and factories left behind once the Interchange replaced the old station in 2017. The braided hoses under newer sinks are reaching the age where they let go, and a burst upstairs sends water through the ceiling of the unit below.

The ground under both

The flats beside Throsby Creek are reclaimed, and a trench hits groundwater before it is a metre deep. That shallow water keeps the old drainage runs part-charged between blockages, so a slow line here turns into a surcharge sooner than it would on ground that drains free.

Where the Work Sits

Each hub covers the version of the job this suburb hands us:

Plumber feeding a drain camera into a pit at a commercial unit

Blocked drains

Where the camera goes down the earthenware runs first and the fix follows the footage

Plumber finishing a continuous-flow gas hot water install

Hot water

From cupboard units in the rental cottages to systems for the apartment stock, with a temporary tank available while a replacement is sorted

Gas fitter checking an oven connection

Gas fitting

Including disused coal-gas pipework hiding behind pre-war walls that needs a tightness test before anything connects

What Wickham Hands the Truck

Cottage drains and creek flats

Unrenovated cottages can still be on original galvanised supply, rusted nearly shut inside, so the tap over the kitchen sink runs thin while the shower holds pressure. Across the flat streets, hard paving and almost no grade mean a short, heavy downpour ponds in the back lanes and yards before the gullies can take it.

The sporting and marina edge

Passmore Oval and the yacht club at the Throsby Basin marina give the suburb its club side, and clubrooms or trading premises fall under commercial plumbing. Whatever the era of the pipe underneath, the figure is fixed before the work starts.

Common Questions From the Terrace Streets

Do you work on the apartment buildings near the Interchange?

Yes. The towers that followed Newcastle Interchange are on the same run as the older cottages, and the braided hoses and shared drainage in that stock get the same fixed quote. Owners corporations get the full paperwork process too.

Can you replace galvanised pipes in an older cottage here?

Yes. Unrenovated workers cottages can still be running galvanised steel supply, which rusts closed from the inside and leaves the kitchen tap running weak. We quote the re-run in copper or PEX before anything comes out of the ground.
