Carrington Plumbing Co is the emergency plumber for Carrington and the suburbs beside it: burst water services, sewers backing into yards, split hot water units, gas smells and laundries going under. What We Handle When It Cannot Wait

Burst pipes

When one of the old steel supply lines finally lets go under a cottage floor, there may be no shut-off nearer than the meter, so the loss runs until someone reaches it. We isolate the main, cut the ruined section out and swap in copper or PEX.

Sewer surcharge

Cracked clay sewers in waterlogged ground can push sewage up through yard gullies during heavy rain. We clear it, then film the pipe so you know whether it was a one-off or a sign the run is failing.

No hot water

Salt air shortens cylinder life on this peninsula, and a corroded tank that splits can flood a small laundry fast. Repairs, changeovers and a temporary hot water tank while a replacement is sorted are all covered under hot water.

Gas smells

A gas smell comes before everything else. The safety steps are under gas leaks, and the same crew handles the repair once the leak is found.

Stormwater flooding

Heavy rain on a high tide can leave yard gullies with nowhere to empty, and they spill. The clearing side sits under stormwater drains.

What Should You Do Before We Arrive?

The first ten minutes decide how much damage a burst causes. In order:

  1. 01

Stop the main at the meter

In this suburb the meter sits in the front garden or at the boundary, sometimes in a box that is itself sitting under water on the low streets. Close the tap fully, turning clockwise.

  2. 02

    Open a low tap

A laundry or garden tap at the lowest point empties the leftover pressure so nothing keeps pushing through the split.

  3. 03

Power off, if the switchboard is dry

Water near a powerpoint or appliance means switching that circuit off, but never touch a wet switchboard. If in doubt, keep clear and flag it on the phone.

  4. 04

    Lift what matters

Get floor rugs, cartons and anything sitting on the floor of a weatherboard cottage up and away from the water.

Once the water is off, ring (02) 4063 1232 and stay on the line for anything else to do before the plumber reaches you.

How Do You Know It Is an Emergency?

Not every plumbing fault needs a night callout, and we would rather you did not pay the higher figure for a job that can wait. The honest dividing line:

Ring now

Water you cannot isolate, sewage at floor level or above, a gas smell, a cylinder leaking fast enough to fill a bucket, or stormwater entering the house.

Book daytime

A slow drain that still drains, a dripping tap, a hot water service that is running but struggling, or a damp corner of the yard that never grows.

If a call turns out to be something a routine booking could have handled, you hear that before any after-hours charge applies. The drains hub covers the slow-fault side of the trade, and leak detection covers the hidden-damp side.

How Is an After-Hours Call Priced?

On an emergency job, the figure is shaped by:

  • The time of the call A 2am burst costs more than the same job at 2pm, and the difference is written into the quote.
  • What has failed A burst galvanised line needs pipe and fittings; a surcharged sewer needs clearing gear and a camera pass to check the run.
  • Access A burst deep under a tight cottage subfloor is slower to get at than one beside the meter, and excavation on this ground can strike groundwater fast.
  • Parts The section of pipe, the valve or the fitting the job actually needs, named in the quote.

Why Faults Here Turn Into Floods

The ground is the accelerant

This is reclaimed land, ship ballast piled onto a tidal flat, and it still sits barely above the harbour. Groundwater is just under the lawns, so a burst or a surcharged drain is not just a wet patch; it is water with nowhere to run.

The pipes were laid for a different century

At the last census there were 856 dwellings here, led by Victorian and Federation cottages, and beneath them run the original clay sewers, jointed in mortar that cracks as the reclaimed fill under them shifts. Plenty of them still carry pre-war galvanised water services rusted down inside.

The bridge is the only way out

Cowper Street is the single road on or off the peninsula, over Throsby Creek to Wickham, so every trade van comes and goes by that one bridge. Out of hours, a small leak left running can turn into a flood well before morning.

When We're Not the Right Call

Water escaping from Hunter Water's pipe before your meter is theirs to fix, and we give you the number to report it. Faulty wiring or a tripping switchboard is an electrician's job. And street pits overflowing in a storm are the council's, though we can still help keep the water out of the house.

The Call From Go to Whoa

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1232 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Isolate, clear or cap

The water is shut off, the blockage cleared or the ruined section cut out, and the immediate damage stopped before any repair work begins.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Questions for the Middle of the Night

What counts as a plumbing emergency in Carrington?

Water pouring from a pipe you cannot close off, sewage rising into a yard or fixture, a gas smell, and a hot water cylinder split and flooding the house. Slow drains and dripping taps are daytime jobs. If you are unsure, ring anyway; a two-minute description is enough to judge whether it can wait.

Do you come out in the middle of the night?

Yes, weekends and public holidays included. The quote you approve already carries the night-time rate, so there is no second number later.

How do I turn the water off before you get here?

Look for the stop tap at the water meter, by the front boundary of a cottage yard or on the footpath. Close it clockwise, then open the lowest tap in the house to let the pipes empty.

Can you fix a burst pipe on the spot?

Where the burst is a rusted pre-war steel service, the failed section can be swapped for new pipe then and there. If the fault sits before the meter on Hunter Water's side, they handle it instead.
